How do you vet an e-waste and data destruction vendor?
We are clearing out old servers, batteries, and a few drives with sensitive data. I have never arranged this kind of pickup before. How do you usually verify that a recycling company is legit and handles data properly before signing anything?

I looked into this a while back and ended up comparing a few providers rather than taking the first one that answered. The things that told me the most were how clearly they described the actual process, whether they separated batteries by chemistry, and what standards their data destruction was measured against. One of the options I checked was Modern Waste Solutions, and you can look through it to see how that kind of scope is normally laid out, including on-site hard drive shredding, data center and UPS decommissioning, and X-ray equipment deinstallation. If a vendor is vague about certificates of destruction or where the material actually goes afterward, that would make me slow down. I would ask for written confirmation of chain of custody and compare at least two or three companies before deciding.
